IN THE PRESENCE OF WHAT
WE ARE NOT THERE WE ARE!
by Rita Curtis

When I was an art student in college I learned about the concept of negative
spaces. These are the areas on the paper or the canvas that are not painted or
colored—the white space on the page. Our eyes are not trained to see the
negatives spaces, because they frame those elements which we do see—the
picture, the line, the color.

I was asked to look at that space as though it were as special and as important
as the statement I was trying to actually create with my pen or brush. In fact,
I was told, negative space is equally important because it defines the
statement; it gives the picture clarity and meaning.

Of the handful of learning I brought with me from that time to now, this
particular teaching remains as a useful tool of perception.

Recently I moved a truckload of furniture from my home in Portland to furnish a
new part-time apartment in Southern Oregon. I drove the 300 miles sitting high
up in the cab of a fifteen foot rental truck, my palms sweaty and my entire body
on alert all the way. The steering wheel was twice as big as normal and at a
rather flat angle, so when I turned a corner, my entire upper body moved
in sync with the wheel.

Climbing into the cab necessitated a big step up and pulling myself into the
seat, and I’m not a short woman. Driving was a whole new challenge--just
changing from one lane to another was a heart-pounding ordeal. I didn’t dare
pull into a parking lot or gas station in any position that required me to have
to reverse the truck—there was no way I could back up.

It was a nerve-racking experience for me, and I was in a state of heightened
awareness from the moment I left Portland, until I drove into the rental
drop-off location in Ashland.

Unfortunately, driving in a state of awareness is not something I always do,
even though I drive long distances several times a month. Most often I go on
autopilot while I drive, which doesn’t bode well for my safety or that of the
people unfortunate enough to be on the road with me.

But this particular driving experience was entirely different. It felt like I
was dwelling in one of those negative spaces—a state of awareness that would
define all the rest of my experience in a different way. Once I knew driving a
big truck experientially, I could no longer see driving any other vehicle, or
the act of driving itself, in the same way ever again.

Elizabeth Lesser, co-founder of The Omega Institute and author of The New
American Spirituality, writes about a teaching tool she uses in her classes.
Having noticed that most people allow their negative or unhappy, or even
traumatic experiences to define how the rest of their life’s experience will be
viewed, she asks her students to create a device for remembering how much
happiness they have had in their lives. The exercise is to create a statement
about what has caused pleasure in their experience rather than what has caused
pain, to write what she calls “Autobiographies of Joy”.

After writing, students more readily see that they can move into a space of
what Lesser describes as “grateful well-being”. What we notice is that this is
a state in which we can actually dwell full time if we allow ourselves to see
what is right with us, instead of what is wrong--to look at the negative, or
defining spaces, in our lives rather than the momentary brush stroke of anger or
lack or fear. To see, really see, the moments of quiet surrounding the trauma,
and notice that these are the places in which our peace resides and, if we let
it, our joy.

If we can do this, then our consciousness can reside there as well, instead of
just visiting occasionally. Our being will expand to allow us to realize that
this is the space in which we will find our highest and best selves. It is then
that we can choose to meet ourselves there, and to become fast friends with the
God within.

A few years ago I remember being very angry with my dearest friend. He was calm
in the face of my tirade, and I soon saw my error and apologized in a long and
tearful email to him.

“Thank God you see me,” I wrote, “Even when I’m angry and not being who I really
am.” I will never forget his reply, “No, no…thank God you see you. If you didn’t,
you could not see not you, and then you could never make any movement at all.”

WHY WASN'T IT ME WHO WAS CHOSEN?

Dear Neale: I have enjoyed the experience of your books. My husband has read
the Bible hundreds of times. I have never. He says to not believe in the
“devil” is to not believe in God. According to the Bible this goes hand in
hand. What’s this all about?

During your dialogue, did you hear a voice, and did God put Himself in human
form for you to “see” who you were talking to? Was it a deep man’s voice? Tell
me what it was. And why wasn’t it me who was chosen? Why wasn’t it my choice to
write these three books?

Please don’t misunderstand these questions. I’m not only struggling with this
money stuff (I’m about to go under if I don’t change something quickly), I’m
scared, then I’m grateful, then I don’t know what I am. I believe my soul is
“re-membering.” I believe we create our reality. My focus on being keeps getting
distorted because of the money I’m not creating. Please help me. Cindy, AZ.

Hello, Cindy. God created the possibility of “evil,” but that does not mean God
created a “devil” or a “Satan.” The “evil” that God created is simply, and
nothing more and nothing less than, the opposite of good.

We have all been given the power to imagine “evil” in our lives, and to make it
very real. But in the realm of the absolute, “evil” is simply a figment of our
imagination. That is, it is not real. It does not exist. It is not a part of the
kingdom of God.

Shakespeare put this beautifully when he wrote, “Nothing is evil lest thinking
make it so.” Those were extraordinarily wise words. There is no devil, Cindy.
Satan is a figment of our imagination. Organized religion must, however,
make you believe there is a devil, otherwise you will have nothing to fear,
and if you have nothing to fear, you will not need organized religion.

In my dialogue, Cindy, I heard what I have called “a voiceless voice.” It was
neither a man’s voice nor a woman’s voice. All I truly remember about the voice
is that it was the softest, most gentle, compassionate, wise voice I had ever heard.

As to why you weren’t chosen, you were, Cindy. All of us are “the chosen ones.”
Not a one of us is excluded. But many of us exclude ourselves, out of our
thought that “this sort of thing is impossible,” or “I am not worthy.”

When I was a young boy in a Catholic upbringing, I remember being taught a
prayer by the nuns in our school: “Lord, I am not worthy that Thou shouldst
enter under my roof. Yet say but the word, and my soul shall be healed.” Prayers
such as that, and similar ones from other religions, have caused millions of
people to believe in their unworthiness, which is exactly the opposite of what
God would want us to understand about ourselves.

So there are many reasons why “many are called, but few choose themselves.”
But wait, my friend, wait. The game isn’t over yet. There is no telling
what you might do once you choose to believe in your own worthiness as
a creation of God, Who, incidentally, doesn’t make junk.

Finally, about the money and beingness situation. I want you to know
that a year from today you will still be here, Cindy. A year from today
we will both still be alive, still be playing at the game. The only
question will be, what shall be the quality of our lives? I believe the
quality of my life will be extraordinary, and I believe that I will
cause that to occur by moving into a place of being which causes the
quality of the lives of others to be wonderful, all others whose lives I touch.

Do you believe that about yourself, Cindy ? If you do, then you and I are going
to have a very good year. So don’t go around asking, “What are we to eat?
What are we to drink? Wherewithal shall we clothe ourselves?” Keep your
eye where? On God. Each day has problems of its own. Yet “seek ye first
the Kingdom of Heaven, and all else shall be added unto you. For where
your heart is, there will your treasure also be.”

Move through your life loving God, and doing God’s work, Cindy. That means
giving people back to themselves. Whatever you would choose for yourself, give
to another. Whatever you find yourself lacking, find another who lacks even
more, and give of what you have to those who have even less.

In this will you be truly blessed, for in this will you speak the truth about
yourself, which is: I am the source. This will activate a cellular memory, which
will begin at once to create this manifestation in your present reality.

Hugs, Neale Walsch

ANOTHER PEAK AT "TOMORROW'S GOD"

“Evolution is the bottom line purpose of everything. And there is no faster way
to evolve than through the process of your exterior relationship with another.

Holy relationship is where your interior meets the exterior of another, and
where the interior of another meets your exterior, and where, in the best of
moments, the exteriors of both are melted by the heat of both interiors,
allowing those interiors to meet and awaken to the awareness that they are
Identical and One, and to experience that.

This is the expression in the world that you call Love.

… It is possible to have too much sex to allow one to advance spiritually? I
mean, does sexual energy interfere with spiritual energy? Does the expression of
it deplete one’s “energy reserve,” making it difficult or impossible to achieve
spiritual awakening?

If that were true literally, then Life would be working against the purpose of
Life Itself. The purpose of Life is to evolve, yet if the physical act that
creates Life and expresses love reduces the prospects of evolution, wouldn’t
that be a huge flaw in the workings of the universe?

Sure seems to me that it would be. I can assure you that Life was not put together
that haphazardly. It is not true that sexual expression inhibits spiritual
awakening. Not even a lot of it. It is true that too much emphasis on anything
produces imbalance and depletion of energies.

Too much work, too much eating, too much drinking, too much sugar, gardening,
bowling, swimming, TV, carrot juice, sex…too much of anything—even too much
spiritual practice—can create an imbalance.

The Buddha discovered that. He experienced that enlightenment could not be
achieved through the practice of self-indulgence—but neither could it be
achieved through the practice of self-deprivation or self-mortification. In
fact, it was achieved on the middle path between the two, where all things were
kept in balance.”
